P3 Family History Newsletter 2021 Winter-Spring

Hello Parley’s 3rd Ward

Some months ago Jim and Natalie McCullough, our Temple and Family History Specialists, extended a challenge to several to consider any object that has special meaning to them that they had received as part of their own ancestor’s legacy. Shortly thereafter, as part of our 5th Sunday meeting, the McCullough’s shared a video of the people with their meaningful object’s and their stories. If you were not able to participate in the meeting or not able to see the video, here is the link.

The McCullough’s then extended that invitation to us all, see “Call for Stories” below.

The 2021 Winter/Spring newsletter includes some additional objects and stories from our neighbors.

A special thanks to Natalie and Jim for their efforts and to all those that have contributed to this excellent Family History project. I hope that their efforts and messages inspire us to better appreciate the joy and gratitude that comes from learning of our Family History.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Bishop Okland

CALL FOR STORIES!

A few months ago our ward enjoyed hearing the stories of several ward members about how physical objects or places linked them to ancestors or provided a way to be remembered by posterity. Our revered Jim Parkin spoke of his surgery slippers- shellacked and mounted by his grateful interns honoring his enormous medical legacy. The exuberant Brown children talked about several homes that link them to their pioneer convert grandparents many generations back.

As a teen, spiritually awakening Tom Whitney was a witness to his prophet ancestor Wilford Woodruff’s artifacts, and especially his precious diaries. Beautiful and articulate high school senior, Vivien Hawes, schooled us in the power of fabric arts with the quilts made for her by her grandmother’s friend.

Resident foodie and excellent cook, Ann Whitney, shared family lore and wisdom inspired by her Deseret News columnist mother’s cookbooks.

Each of these brief remembrances opened a window into another era, another family, another way of creating connection and context in someone’s life.

*We invite each ward member of every age to consider a piece of art or furniture, clothing, a letter or book, jewelry, vehicle, recreational item… or any physical object you would like to pass forward, or which you received as part of a parent’s or ancestor’s legacy.

  • Tell us why this object matters to you, how it helps you remember, honor or understand a family member better.
  • Please feel free to send a photo with your brief story to [email protected].

Take fifteen minutes and do it today this afternoon

If you do not hear back from me in several days- I did not receive it- please check the email and resend.
